Crispy.. Yes, for me, this is only happening on child portals.  I just went in to verify that I can still edit site settings on my main portal site.

Got a little more information.   I always use Mozilla and never noticed that Javascript is failing when this condition occurs.  I run it in Internet Explorer with Javascript Debugging ON.  It comes up with an error stating 'WebForm_PostBackOptions' is undefined.  Well, this didn't help too much because there are only a few posts on the internet concerning this error.  From what I see it has something to do with crosspage posting, but I'm not too sure.

When I went in as the SuperUser and clicked on the Host -> Portals then clicked on the child portal I'm trying to edit, then do my edit in the site settings (in particular - changing the site container skin) it works!  But after logging out and then logging back in as the child portal admin and trying to make that same edit fails.

So that's all I have now.  I wanted to post my progress here.  I'll know more in a little bit.

I too experienced this irritating problem, a while back.  After much searching, with no answers found, I contacted my host's support.  They moved me to a "less-used" server and the problem went away!  It must have to do with being on a shared host, and the number of times IIS is being reset by the actions of other websites.

You can ask your host, and if they're nice (I left two other hosts for lack of support for DNN) they just might do the same for you.  I'm very happy with the support I get from WH4L, and my spontaneous logouts are just a bad memory.

Well, I guess I'm in a unique situation to be able to step through code and see this happening reliably.  I can get this to happen on my dev machine reliably.  Yes, sometimes it does go away, but it always comes back.  I am blown away by this because it never happens when I log in as the SuperUser.

kfayal, if it never happens when you're logged on as the superuser, I would guess the issue is a page is attempting to access a resource outside the portal, and getting automatically logged out i.e. DNN detects that you've switched portals, and requires the new user to log in except if you're a superuser, as they have access automatically. If you could install a http proxy such as fiddler http://www.fiddlertool.com/fiddler/ , then you could browse as a normal user, and when you're logged out, look back through the http session list to see which request(s) are outside the portal e.g. mysite.com/portals/1/somefile.jpg followed by mysite.com/portals/2/someotherfile.jpg would show a switch from portal 1 to 2.
