Did you know that there is some reading on skinning, already written with lots of answers?
There is a Skinning Document found in the Documents Download when you download your DotNetNuke zip file.
You can find it HERE when logged in. Please download the version for your installation.
It's a great start and where most professional skinners got their first taste of DotNetNuke Skinning.
Take the time to read this as it gives you quite a good overview on the following.
- How to upload skins
- SkinObject - Date, Login, User, etc
- CSS Classes that relate to the SkinObjects
- XML Classes that relate to the SkinObjects
- Solpart Menu Hierarchy and all CSS classes related to the menu
In every DotNetNuke 3 - 3.2.2 & 4 - 4.00 installation, there are 5 sets of skins - DNN-Blue, DNN-Gray, DNN-Green, DNN-Red, DNN-Yellow.
Each one of these skins contain the following files:
- 1 x html file
- 1 x ascx file
- 1 x xml file
- skin.css file
- Zipped skin package which includes the skin & conatiners zipped together
In every DotNetNuke 3.3 & 4.3 installation, there are 2 sets of skins - DNN-Blue, DNN-Gray.
Each one of these skins contains the following -
- 1 x html file
- 1 x ascx file
- 1 x xml file
- skin.css file
- Zipped skin package which includes the skin & containers zipped together
If you are looking for other skins - try downloading the 3.0.13 build in the archives and unzipping, go to the Install/Skins folder and you'll see a handful of extra free skins that were embedded but removed due to file sizes - it doubled the size of the release.
By reading through the skinning documentation & having these files opened at the same time, you'll find it much easier to grasp the basics and perhaps help you find some answers to your questions.
A good start for understanding skinning is to use the default skins as your starting point, rather than starting from scratch and making changes and seeing the results.
If you do need to ask a question
Include as much information about your specific problem as possible by including some or all of the following:
1. A clear description of the problem
2. A link to an online example of the problem.
If you want an answer this is the best option.
3. An image of the problem
4. The CSS that's causing the problem
5. Specific instructions on how we may be able to re-create the problem in our own environment
6. What skin is the question about? (default skin / custom skin)
7. A link to download your skin if you don't mind it being exposed to the public
