I open solution dotnetnuke.all.sln.  no files are displayed under desktopmodules folder.

Module directories and files are added when the application or individual modules are installed. Don't worry about this. Just proceed as normal and it'll be populated during the initial install.

each module has been extracted into a sepearate solution, as they are now developed independantly from the core framework. you will find a solution for each module, if you open the .resources file (a renamed .zip) in the module's folder and extract all files.
