I have read most of  the posts here about DNN 5.0. Most people are asking about the release date but I am not even seeing the expected new features. I have read some blurps about version control, workflow and multilanguage content. Not too exciting for the end user. I also read some posts from a few team members and how the new features are not set yet (Feb thru April posts). When I read something like I know that the next major release is way in the future. I mean if the new features are not set yet, then developers are not coding them in full force. No public alpha.. beta releases yet? Another sign that a lot of work is till ahead. My guess it won't be out this year.

One Comment: Where's the drag and drop ala pageflakes.com. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are all using drag & drop for their personalized sites along with many third party personal sites. Yet DNN is still using a "tell me where you want the container be and I will put there for you and hope it has the effect you want" method of placing containers (or widgets as known too). Also more Ajaxy functionality is needed.

Still.. I like DNN and I want it to get better.

Abdu,

DNN is in its 5th beta of version 5. Also, the drag and drop around the page was available for module administrators way back in version 3. This release isn't too exciting for the end user, it is paving the way for these type of things in the future however. The big deal that I can think for end users is the admin only modules will be available for placement on other pages.

It's only my opinion, as I noted there was nothing much online with real examples to analyse.  After such a long wait and little information, it's a bit disappointing to hear from another core team member that this has 'nothing exciting' ... however, I think if you can look at how they are uncoupling the modules, and this has obviously been a bigger job than anticipated, then it could lead to bigger and better things in the future.

I hope this gives you a little more reading about the build... and glad to hear you still like DNN!

To be fair Nina, Chris said there would not be much exciting here for "end users".  I would not read much into that since I think there is quite a bit here for skinners and module developers and even admins and we have certainly laid down a solid foundation for some later features which could not make it in this release. 

Just removing the distinction between admin and non-admin menus and modules has had far reaching implications.  As did a unification of the package installation framework.  Add in better XHTML support, a widget framework and skin parser enhancements not to mention hundreds of bug fixes and there is a lot here to be happy about..  It is just going to take some time for module developers and skinners to really start leveraging these changes before people really understand what we are providing with this release.  But if you are looking for one giant jaw-dropping feature that everyone is going to love then this is not the release for you.

Widget framework - that's the first I'd heard of that.  That sounds pretty cool to me!
