I have to say that as a DNN user since the pre-DNN IBuySpy days, I've feared this day coming. In my 26 years as a professional in software development it's been a pattern I've seen repeated numerous times. It happened with Community Server and many other Open Source initiatives. It starts out free and open and over time becomes commercialized and closed. Once commercialized, it becomes increasingly more expensive and proprietary. I've genuinely hoped that DNN would resist the temptations and remain true to the initial vision. I feel betrayed. I've invested thousands of dollars and thousands of hours in DNN. In my opinion, DNN has taken its first step toward the dark side. The lesser experienced may not discern the signs but it's clear that DNN has taken the first step away from true openness into the realm of proprietary closed systems with Professional Edition. Now, it's time to start looking for alternatives before it gets further out of hand.

Mourning this day!

As long as the source is always made available (open), then I don't see any reason to feel betrayed.

Even if the DNN Corp stopped releasing the source (which I don't think will happen) you still have a BSD license to this point, so the only thing you would loose is future development by them.

I have a feeling you may see even more development done by the corporation and released for free if they have a way to fund the development.

Plus, the real value is in the third party modules ( both free and commercial ), and that ecosystem is very decentralized so it would be very hard for even the DNN Corp. to break that down.

Bottom line is to lower your expectations of any one entity and you will find yourself pleasantly surprised when they meet or exceed them.

 John,

DotNetNuke Corp., namely Shaun and Joe have anounced a couple of times the new professional version, containing additional value to address the specific needs of professional users of DotNetNuke. They also stated, that the now called Community version will have the same code base and continue to be an open source version, and they are also planning for earlier access to the codefor community members within the next months.

I agree with John, that a stronger entity to develop and maintain the product will improve development speed and benefit all the community.

And the paranoia begins!

I assure you people, that what Sebastian says is true.

I personally have no fears that the release of the professional version of DNN will have a negative impact on the way DotNetNuke has been accepted and will continue to grow. As Seb says, the community version will not let you down.

Time will tell. Same codebase does't tells so much. 2.1 and 5.1 have the same codebase.

I am more worried about the reference site http://www.thinkcashfinancial.com/ is this the Professional version :)
