Hello,

I just read about DNN's acquisition of ActiveModules.  I am happy and worried at the same time: I think this is good news for the community because DNN has more resources to put onto the social networking side of things (super important) with a more integrated/consistent UI. Active Forums is a very good forum module too (all other AM modules are of a high quality too).

However, at the same time I am a little worried that it means I am now going to have to purchase Professional or Enterprise to continue using the software I have been using for the last 3 years (I have an ActiveModules Enterprise license (which is about to expire)).

From Blog: "Some Active Social technology will be used as a basis to build new social media features for the DotNetNuke Professional and Enterprise Editions."

Would it be possible to clarify DNN's intentions with how the product will be split between the Community versus the Pro/Ent DNN editions? I was quite happy running the community DNN edition with an enterprise license of AM but I could not easily justify buying an Enterprise DNN license every year (which is a lot more expensive than the AM ent license renewl cost)  just to keep using the advanced features of this software (obviously it depends on each individuals situation but the reality is that whilst my DNN site gets decent traffic it generates next to nothing in revenue for me).

I use all the features of ActiveSocial and want to do heavy integration with my own custom modules at some point. Before this acquisition I knew that my license for AS was going to cost me x a year and I would always have the latest and greatest version, but now it sounds like the equivalent upcoming functionality will cost me a lot more every year.

ps  I've been out of DNN for a few months working on Silverlight projects - I could not find a general DNN forum to post in - hope this is ok.

Thanks,
Rodney

Hi Rodney, you raise some good questions. The press release provides a high level perspective of the acquisition and I would encourage you to read my Blog (  http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/B... ) and Will Morgenweck's Blog (  http://www.activemodules.com/blogs/wi... ) for further clarification on how we intend to integrate the modules with our various offerings.

I too am a long time activemodules user and am quite heavily invested in the modules and share the same concerns as Rodney. I ended up on the short end of the stick with DNNs acquistion of anaother module suite and I cannot afford an enterprise edition. I have an online business in startup mode with AS as the core module and if I lose access to AS upgrades and support etc it WILL not be good.

I hope DNN takes care of us in this case.

You mean the purchase of Document Exchange which will now cost you 2k/year for DotNetnuke?

The Blogs are too high level and words today mean nothing tomorrow right Shaun? Remember, DotNetNuke will always be free.

Mail Connector is one of the main features of a forum. It will now be 2k/year.

Active Social... is mentioned to be used for other enhancements in the paid versions. Also, once support contracts are up, DotNetNuke will be free to shut down Active Social on new releases as there won't be anyone to make changes when the core changes.

This is one sure way to increase people buying the paid versions.. and piss off many people.

Snowcovered, Document Exchange, Active Modules.. what am I missing past or future?

I guess DotNetNuke upgrade changed our display name to be first and last name. Thanks for understanding privacy.
