I would like to show on my webpage one or more individual records in my SQL Server database. E.g. "Author 1 & Author 2,  2011". (Ideally the fields of the record to be shown would be dependent on the user (role).)

Would this be possible in an existing module, like the HTML module or do I have to develop my own extension? And which type of extension would that be? An ASP.NET (user/web server/web part) control, a module, a widget, a dashboard control, a skin object, or...

An ASP.NET user control (per record to be shown) within a module should do the trick. But I have to adjust the module every time I want to add or adjust some text. Isn't there a simpler way (for example in which I can use my own made extension in an existing module)?

Custom module will be best solution.
In Settings tab you can choose interesting records/tables. And this tab will be availabe for admin only.

If you site is running dnn 5.6.2 and asp.net 4.0 then this sort of thing could be done relatively quickly using the built in Razor Host module.
