This error is effecting the page as well, but with the solpart menu the problem is most apparent. I am getting an error when trying to open a webpage from Word 2007. It is adding and changing characters on the web page. To the solpart menu it is adding this character â, which is a Latin letter with circumflex.  It also is changing an apostrophe to ’ on the page elsewhere from the solpart menu. Here what I've done to determine where the problem lies:

1. Word 2007 link --> IE 6  fails

2. Visual Studio app link --> IE 6 works

3. Word 2007 link ---> IE 7 works

4. Word 2007 link ---> Firefox works.

5. Excel 2007 link ---> IE  6 fais

6. Word 2007 link ---> IE 6 to test environment running same DNN app works

Changing the encoding in web.config from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 changes the apostrophe to a question mark in IE 6. Asking customers to change to IE 7 would be a "hardship" for them so another solution would be preferable. This is DNN version 4.8.3

Thanks.

I found a work around: We had spaces that we were using in the menuitem. The spaces were being encoded to the Latin character in the solpart menu. I removed them and added a spacer.gif.
